L-Tryptophan ((S)-2-​amino-​3-​​(1H-​indol-​3-​yl)propionic acid, l-Tryptophan, Trp) is a hydrophobic non-polar amino acid containing indole in the side chain . Tryptophan is a part of proteins and is an essential amino acid, that is, it is not synthesized in the body of animals and humans, but comes only with food.

Tryptophan serves as the initial compound for the biological synthesis of various indole derivatives, including the hormone melatonin, the neurotransmitter serotonin, vitamin PP, and a number of others. 5-HTP (oxitriptan, 5-hydroxytryptophan, 5-HTP, (S)-2-amino-3-(5-hydroxy-1H-indol-3-yl) propanoic acid, oxytriptan), also known as hydroxytriptan, is an amino acid found in proteins. It is a precursor of the neurotransmitter serotonin. It is also an intermediate in the metabolism of tryptophan, one of the most important amino acids.
